Travelogue Tanzania 2009
Programme Day 5 – Ngorongoro Crater

We get up early. Nebula fills the crater.

On the way down into the crater we see our first hyena.

Mama is less cute.

The pub lies on the gravel path and enjoys the early morning sun. A little bit later we see its mother, much uglier and with the typical inflated tummy.

We see our first buffaloherds, the first gnusand our first male lion, though the latter can only be seen from quite a distance and hidden in the grass. There are lots of birdsin the crater, some of them well known in Europe others not.

Ngorongoro Crater - rhino
The Ngorongoro Crater is probably the only place in Tanzania where you have good chances to see rhinos. There so few of them left that each of them has a name.

Our next highlight: two cheetahs. They seemed to be torn between hunting and sun-bathing and they made up their mind next to our jeep. Anyway, this reflection was taking place right next to our Jeep.

The cheetah sees something – I don’t.

At the picknick place where we eat our boxed lunch some birds specialized in stealing from the tourists. Inside your car you are a bit (photo) safer, outside a bird of prey might grab your role directly out of your hands.

In the afternoon we stopped for a long time at a so called hippo pool and watched the hippos and an elephant eating in the water.

On our way out of the crater we passed a buffalo mother with a calf born only minutes ago. The father stood beside her and watched us carefully. It might have been the first steps of the calf that we watch.
