Travelogue Tanzania 2009
Programme Day 8 – Serengeti

We start in the early morning again. First we do not meet a lot of animals but we enjoy the landscape and take photos of many flowers along the road. At a picknick place we are finally allowed to leave the car, the first time in the Serengeti.

Serengeti - Gabi takes photos of small flowers.

… and in the background you can see Volker taking other photos.

A couple of minutes later we realize the danger of this place. We drive through the same landscape, grass, no animals to be seen. Suddenly a pair of lion ears appears through the grass, then a young lion, we still see nothing else. Then only ten meters from us, a female lion and her baby stand up, then another one and another one. There must have been about five females with fifteen baby lions, they were all hidden in the grass and then passed our jeep on the way to the shadows of a rock.

Serengeti - A lion cub emerges from the tall grass.
What’s coming there?
Serengeti - A lion cub sits by the way and looks at us.
Take a break and watch the tourists.
Serengeti - lion mom with two lion cubs in the tall grass
Mama is less cute.
Serengeti - Two lion cubs are playing with each other.
It’s so boring to lie in the shadow.

We spend almost an hour watching the lion family. Then we continued and saw hippos, buffalos, zebras and many other animals.

Serengeti - a group of zebras stands in a water hole and drinks.

For lunch we returned to the hotel.

Serengeti - Volker cleaning the cameras and binoculars
equipment maintenance
Serengeti - Under a cloud you can clearly see a local heavy rain shower.
Heavy showers at the horizon but we stay dry.

In the afternoon our last regular game drive in Serengeti.

Serengeti - wildebeest, giraffes and zebras mixed up.
Normally the giraffes don’t mingle that closely with gnus and zebras.

And finally we see lion with pray. The gnu can’t be dead for a long time but the first hunger is satisfied so we can’t watch the lions eat.

Serengeti - carcass of a wildebeest recently torn by lions.

Serengeti - a lioness who has blood around her mouth, flies in her face
The lioness still has blood around her mouth, flies in her face
Serengeti - A lonely gnu standing in the water of a shallow salt-water lake, no other gnu around.
What’s going on? A lonely gnu standing in the water, no other gnu around. To make it worse, the water is salty and not drinkable.
